Although many stores would like to convince us that Christmas is the next
holiday coming up, we do have Thanksgiving right around the corner. It amazes me that such a wonderful holiday is seemingly ignored by big business -as if they could extinguish it from our calendars and make us celebrate Christmas with more presents during the month of November as well as December. Is being thankful just not marketable enough for retailers?
I guess I should be happy they’ve left a holiday alone for us to celebrate with
family and friends without marketing some gadget or necessary object they’re willing to sell us.
I love Thanksgiving. I suppose it’s because I love autumn. The colors of the leaves, the crisp smell in the air, no summer humidity, and cool enough temperatures to enjoy snuggling by an outside fire or sip a warm cup of cocoa inside with a good book. It’s the perfect time of year. Throwing in a holiday that reminds me of how thankful I should be of what I have and more importantly who I have in my life, makes it even better.
I think appreciating what is good in our lives influences our impact on
consumerism. I know the more grateful I feel, the less I’m apt to go purchase something I really don’t need. You know, those things we buy around this time of year out of impulse. I’m guilty of it. I think we all are sometimes.
Impulse buys usually end up broken, in the garbage, or sent to Goodwill. I’m going to try to keep this in mind as I peruse the stores this season. I hope you will too.
I’ve noticed a trend recently on Facebook regarding Thanksgiving and the
month of November. Several of my friends have been listing what they are thankful for each day. I think this is wonderful & I really wish I would have started my own “list” on November 1st. But, better late than never, so I started my own “Thankful List” today. It’ll be a daily note on our facebook page.
Join the rest of us and shout to the world what you’re thankful for today and every day this month. It’s no surprise how putting your blessings into printed words makes you feel grateful.
